[Professional Blog] Betty Fox should light Olympic torch

Published on November 30, -1

Hopefully Betty Fox lights the Olympic torch in Vancouver tonight. She's the mother of Terry Fox, whose Marathon of Hope continues to raise millions for cancer research and capture the imagination of Canadians and people around the world. Especially me. I was 12 when the B.C.-born Fox passed through my hometown of Corner Brook in 1980. Some friends, I remember, went to the Trans-Canada Highway to see a little-known runner with one leg who was raising money for cancer. I took a pass, and its something Ive always regretted. Because as he continued running his daily marathons, and courageously battled the cancer that returned, Terry Fox became one of my biggest heroes. He remains one, and long after his passing he exemplifies the power of one and continues to be an icon of hope. And, to me, hope is what the Olympics are all about. And thats why Betty Fox, who has publicly kept her sons dream alive and continued to raise money for cancer research, should light the Olympic flame. Her appearance would complement her sons unfinished mission, and she certainly knows a thing or two about keeping a fire burning.

I agree Steve, if Betty Fox is not the one lighting the torch this evening I'll be disappointed. I watched from the front steps of City Hall as Terry Fox started his journey across Canada and even then before he became Canada's hero I admired his courage to just begin such a feat. Betty Fox reminds of Terry's strength and determination by keeping his dream alive and continuing to raise money for cancer in his memory. She is a true hero herself and should be rewarded so with the honour of lighting the torch and finishing the journey her son set out on. Lest we not forget our heroes.
