With Juno Week flying towards us, Ive been thinking a lot about beer...and Canadian music, mainly what Ive liked. (Why think about stuff you dont?) The result a list of the 10 best Canadian songs ever. They are: 10) Subdivisions, Rush. Subdivisions, in the high school halls, in the shopping malls. Conform out be cast out. Brings me back to a time even more complicated than adulthood junior high! 9) No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature, The Guess Who. Lonely feeling, deep inside...Datn-doo-dow-dow-datn-doo-dow. I could listen to the piano bridge between No Sugar Tonight and New Mother Nature all day. 8) Crying Over You, Platinum Blonde...just joking 8) Constant Craving, k.d. lang. This song is moving, particularly the accordion and Langs haunting voice. 7). Powderfinger, Neil Young. Look out, Mama, theres a white boat comin up the river. They say great songs tell great stories and this one certainly does that. 6) Try, Blue Rodeo. An awesome ballad that takes me back to the old lobby parties at MUN residence, sitting on some steps at Doyle House, belting this out, inspired by $1.25 beer. 5) YYZ, Rush. Its an instrumental, but listen to it going to work and youll be humming it all day. 4) Informer, Snow. Just kidding... but dont forget to a licky boom-boom down. 4) If It Be Your Will, Leonard Cohen. This guy is worthy of his own top 10 list. 3) Blow at High Dough, Tragically Hip. They shot a movie once... The first time I heard this song, a guy name Clayton was singing it in the laundry room at Burtons Pond. Based on his rendition, I ran out and bought the CD. Have loved the song ever since. 2) Who By Fire, Leonard Cohen. Haunting. An almost religious experience to hear him sing it at Holy Heart two years ago. 1) Needle and The Damage Done, Neil Young. This is one of the greatest songs ever...The lyrics, the guitar riff, the story and Youngs voice. Has it all. I sing the song because I love the man, I know that some of you dont understand. Whaddya think? And what do you think are the 10 best Canadian songs ever?
