An eight-day celebration of this province’s art and tradition of storytelling kicked off Tuesday evening with a storyteller brought all the way from Ireland.

The St. John’s Storytelling Festival promotes storytelling in Newfoundland and Labrador and throughout the country, as well as to foster creative expression of the art. The organization hosts workshops, exploring the province’s oral traditions, throughout the year, and produces the Storytelling Circle on the second Thursday of every month. This year, the festival also ran a school touring project, with seven local storytellers travelling to 10 schools across the province to conduct workshops and host concerts.

The seventh annual festival started with a workshop at Admiralty House Museum hosted by Irish storyteller Clare Muireann Murphy. Murphy is known for using her voice and body as a single instrument when telling stories, by dancing her way through them.
