Scenic town is the perfect backdrop for ‘Republic of Doyle,’ says producer

There was drama in Brigus in recent days, including plenty of squealing tires, an armed confrontation and an abundance of onlookers craning their necks for a better view of the action.

But thankfully this crime and craziness was all for the camera.

The scenic and historic Conception Bay North community was serving as a backdrop for the popular CBC television drama “Republic of Doyle,” with heartthrob Allan Hawco, who plays the role of Jake Doyle, leading an invasion of some 120 actors and crew — and a fleet of cars, trucks and travel trailers.

Filming began Thursday and continued into last weekend.

It’s the farthest that production has travelled from St. John’s, and when asked why Brigus was chosen, a senior member of the crew had a very short answer.

“Just look around. It’s beautiful,” said Ross Leslie, line producer and production manager.

The filming was for an episode entitled “In Brigus,” which will air in late February as part of the show’s fourth season.

About a dozen residents also took part as “background performers,” and a handful of dedicated fans were also on hand, waiting to catch a glimpse of Hawco, who was dressed in his trademark leather jacket and jeans.

“I haven’t missed a show,” said Brigus resident Cindy Hiscock, who looked on from a distance as a scene was being filmed near the waterfront.

Republic of Doyle is one of CBC television’s top dramas, attracting well over one million viewers per episode and serving as an important marketing tool for St. John’s and the province.

Community leaders in Brigus were more than happy to OK the temporary inconvenience, including the closure of some roads. Leslie described the level of co-operation as “great, fantastic.”

Season 4 will include 13 episodes.
