With a Salvador Dali-inspired photo booth, occult Shamanistic rituals, video and sound performances and live visual art, Standing Still: A Winter Solstice Cabaret at Eastern Edge Gallery is set to be the most eclectic and interesting thing you could do in St. John’s tonight.
The event is being organized by Freethought productions, a group of eight recent graduates of MUN’s bachelor of fine arts program at Grenfell College.
“We’re keen on putting together different events that focus on visual and performance arts meeting,” explained Freethought member April White, a visual artist whose work will be on display tonight.
Performances will take place at unannounced times: while guests mingle with drinks, a bell will ring and a happening or game will take place.
“We just felt it would add a lot more mystery and surprise to the event,” White said, adding it fits well with the potential end-of-the-world timing.
A photo booth manned by photographer Amanda Larner will allow guests to have their picture taken with Salvador Dali-inspired surreal props and costumes. Other participating artists include Mike Barry, Richard Short, Weiner Shaman, Jana Gillis and Clash Contrast.
Guests are encouraged to dress in greyscale, White said.
“A lot of times you’ll see the dress as black or white tie, and we thought it would be an unusual choice to have everyone dress in black, white and all the shades in between, since the solstice is a dark occurrence; the longest night and the shortest day.”
Tickets to Standing Still are $10 in advance and available at Eastern Edge Gallery and The Travel Bug, or $15 at the door.
Proceeds from the event, which is restricted to ages 19 and over, will support contemporary art and action at the gallery. Doors open at 9 p.m.
