Toronto-based, Newfoundland-born Adriana Maggs' has earned a screening at the infamous Sundance Film Festival with her directorial debut "Grown Up Movie Star."
Maggs' film, shot in Flatrock and St. John's, will be competing in the World Cinema Competition. It is just one portion of the larger festival for which selected films were announced Wednesday.
"Grown Up Movie Star" is set in Newfoundland and features Shawn Doyle (of TV's Big Love) as Ray who, according to promotions, is "a former NHL star whose career was cut short by a drug conviction. Now his life is turned upside down again when his wife takes off to pursue ill-gotten dreams of stardom in Hollywood, leaving him behind to look after their two precocious daughters - teenager Ruby (Tatiana Maslany) and younger sister (Julia Kennedy)."
Also featuring Jonny Harris, Andy Jones, Steve Cochrane, Mark O'Brien and a cameo appearance from Mary Walsh, "Grown Up Movie Star" is scheduled to open in theatres in St. John's and Toronto on Jan. 29. It is being released in Canada by Mongrel Media.
The Sundance Film Festival runs in Park City, Utah from Jan. 21-31, 2010.

I saw part of gums on the opening night at the Majestic. we only went because part of it was at our grandparents house.We thought it was disgusting, it would make one ashamed to be a Newfoundlander and a women. Had we known the content our grandparents house would never have been used.

A HUGE congratulations to the cast and crew of Grown up Movie Star for getting into Sundance. It's an AMAZING accomplishment. I believe it's the first time a film from the Atlantic provinces let alone Newfoundland has even gotten into Sundance. Hats off to you guys and gals. Good luck and have a ball! You deserve it.

I have not seen this movie, but I imagine MW's script had a smattering of cuss words and otherwise fowl utterances as is her trademark. She must have been a longshoreman in a former life. -

@Mary Scott
I wouldn't say it was a disgusting film. Is some of the subject matter disgusing? Yes, it is... But these things happen in real life, and are translated into peoples art all the time. That is what you saw, a piece of art. This and other films at The St. John's Women's Film Festival aren't made to be the next Vince Vaughn/ Jennifer Aniston romantic comedy sensation. They are pieces of people. Pieces of art, and should be treated as such. You don't always have to like what you see, but I'd hate for you to think that there was something wrong, or pornographic, or disgusting going on in your grandparents house. Its a shame you didn't get it... maybe your should stick to Studio 12 at the Avalon Mall. -
