Organizers of the “We Stand on Guard” concert at Mile One Stadium announced again this morning they have cut the ticket price in half for students.

Students with valid ID can purchase their tickets for $20.

Premier Danny Williams and the cast of “Republic of Doyle” have been added to the list of those who’ll take to the stage at the concert, a benefit for the victims of Hurricane Igor.

A door prize of a trip for two to Mexico is being offered, as well.

“While the live concert will be broadcast across the province, it’s the live concert that will truly capture hearts and show the people who were impacted by Igor that we are all here for them,” said Shanneyganock singer Chris Andrews, chairman of the organizing committee, in a media release.

“Every ticket holder will be sending a message that they care for the victims of Igor. Every dollar counts. Every person attending the show counts.”

Hosted by Seamus O’Reagan, “We Stand on Guard” will feature performances by acts including The Idlers, Tara Oram, the Novaks, Amelia Curran, Kim Stockwood, and Hey Rosetta!.

All proceeds will go to the Newfoundland and Labrador region of the Canadian Red Cross.

Regular price tickets are $40.

All tickets can be bought at the Mile One Box Office, by phoning 576-7657 or 1-800-361-4595, or online at www.admission.com.

Transcontinental’s 17 provincial websites — including The Telegram’s — will broadcast the concert live, starting at 7:30 p.m.

If the organizers had not invited big ego Dan to the show, they might have sold out rather than desperately trying to pawn off freebie tickets by the dozen on the local radio stations...CBC is doing its best to peddle its comps.

Jim, the entire Avalon Peninsula barely has a majority of the island's population. St. John's and area, contrary to popular myth all across Newfoundland from Signal Hill to Paradise town limits, is not where the majority live.

Jim claims, "Newfoundlanders. Statscan has half of the entire province in this region, not me." Newfoundland is not the province. In the last Statistics Canada census, the St. John's metro area had a population of 181,00 out of a provincial population of 505,000. I'll let you run the numbers through your calculator, but if the figure you come up with is greater than 50%, you are doing it wrong.

W Mclean - Newfoundlanders. Statscan has half of the entire province in this region, not me.

It is commendable that the Premier is turning up for the fundraiser but why was his government response so limited. In the same week in BC, on or about 28 Sep '10, the government response to Port Hardy and other affected flood areas ranged from $1000 to $300,000 for total lost of home. Why different responses from within the same federal system?

Hey Rosetta! alone are worth the $40 admission price. It's a shame they are apparently not getting more support from the folks in their home province. I saw them last week in Toronto as the opener for a more established band and they stole the show. Especially since this is a benefit concert, I would encourage anyone who is on the fence about going to whip out the old credit card and go check them out!

Lloyd - classy. The majority of the island lives in St. John's/Mt. Pearl/CBS. Igor is forgotten about here and trust me, noone cares... doesn't mean I am happy about it, but if you were out here you would see... NLers gave more to Haiti relief than Igor. Sad but true.

Jim, who is the "us" in "most of us"?

While I do not agree with Jim's outlook on where Nlers live, I have to agree that this last minute pitch to students indicates poor ticket sales. Poor ticket sales driven by lineup that cannot make us part with our dollars.

@JIM- You are an ass! Must be a townie! There is a much larger island out there, outside the overpass... Learn to be respectful for the families who lost everything, you ignorant jerk

Half price because they cannot sell them! Igor is forgotten here in the city - where most of us live.
