The Marine Atlantic vessel that has been the subject of concern over asbestos contamination is set to go back into service this spring, the Crown corporation that operates it said today.
Marine Atlantic said it told employees and its union the MV Atlantic Freighter will go back in rotation to help with growing traffic demands between the mainland and Newfoundland.
The vessel had asbestos identified in the 1990s and it was removed or enclosed. Some of the enclosures were found damaged last fall, repairs were made and tests were conducted. Warning stickers posted around the ship as a precaution caused some alarm with employees.
Marine Atlantic said "asbestos abatement work" will be completed for the spring.
