The springtime New York International Auto Show commenced earlier this month and is in full bloom so to speak, with new production models and concepts on display from manufacturers all over the world. Among the horde of shiny new rides is Acura's RLX Concept, a prelude to a 2013 model that will serve as the luxury automaker's range-topping vehicle.

Founded in 1986, Acura serves as the luxury division of Honda Motor Company, and the new RLX Concept is expected to help advance the brand further into the 21st century. That is particularly true of the Concept's styling which draws from Acura's "Keen Edge" design theme. In comparison to its soon-to-be predecessor; the Acura RL, the RLX Concept has a five centimetre (two inch) longer wheelbase and is wider by approximately five centimetres as well. At the front there are new "Jewel Eye" LED headlights that feature eight high-intensity LED lamps in a double-stacked array, and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels sit at each corner.

The RLX Concept uses Acura's SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system to power all four wheels, with power coming from a 3.5-litre direct-injected VTEC V6 mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. An available front-wheel-drive production version of the RLX will use Acura's Precision All Wheel Steer system to independently control the steering angle of the right and left rear wheels. Precision All Wheel Steer works in conjunction with Acura's vehicle stability assist system and variable gear ratio steering. Peak output for the all-wheel drive RLX Concept is rated at over 370 horsepower while the front-wheel drive version is said to yield 310 horsepower.

The high-tech trend continues into the interior with such features as an Acura navigation system with voice recognition, and dual LCD screens which include an eight-inch display and seven-inch touchscreen. A 14-speaker audio system will be offered in addition to an ELS Surround sound system and both will support MP3 and USB connectivity with integrated HD radio and Bluetooth compatibility. The production version RLX will also boast notable safety technologies such as a collision mitigation braking system, a lane keep assist system, forward collision warning and lane departure warning.

"We have created a true luxury sedan based on our Acura DNA," said American Honda president and CEO Tetsuo Iwamura. "This means achieving advanced performance through engineering efficiency to create a unique synergy between the vehicle and its driver. Inside and out, on the open road or city streets, the sophisticated and elegant Acura RLX will offer a level of connectivity, comfort and advanced performance demanded by today's luxury buyers."
