A precise blending of remarkable contrasts optimally juxtaposed to form something absolutely extraordinary, the Aston Martin DBS Volante intrigues and enthralls in ways few other cars can match.

Depressing the elegant crystalline starter button unleashes an unexpectedly vicious bark from the exhaust system. While the initial sound is the unmistakable signature of ultra high performance, at idle, the engine settles into a resonant burble wholly evocative of its hand-assembled sophistication.

Holding the roof's button lowers and stows it beneath the hard tonneau in 14 seconds, while you pull away, as long as you're running under 50 km/h.

Top lowered, snapping the throttle to the floor turns that vicious bark into a malevolent snarl as the 510-horsepower, 6.0-litre V12 takes full advantage of the opportunity to spin out its 420 ft-lbs of torque.

And while you're busy relishing the beauty of that sound, in four seconds, the DBS is streaking past 100 km/h – with plenty of room left on the tachometer before the shift from first to second comes due.

You're marveling at the smoothness of the Aston's stride when the first corner comes up. Using the aluminum paddles behind the steering wheel, each downshift of the six-speed transmission produces an electrifying throttle blip that makes you grin in appreciation.

Braking for the turn, the firmness of the pedal provides immeasurable assurance and exacting modulation, enabling you to burn off just enough speed to take the corner fast and hard. Feeding the Volante into the curve, the near mathematical precision of the steering is accompanied by tremendous adhesion and now, your grin becomes a smile.

The Aston slices into the corner, demonstrating rock-solid stability and control. You clip the apex, the exit presents itself and you peg the throttle. The engine screams at the top of its lungs, and so do you, as you go racing off toward the next opportunity to do it all over again.

And that smile? Yeah, it spreads across your entire face.

But as cool as all of that is, here's where the Aston really blows your mind.

Cruising around town, your attention focuses inside the car on the lavish interior treatment. Everywhere you look, you're rewarded with yet another dazzling example of craftsmanship, beauty and attention to detail. In fact, the utter civility of it all will have you saying to your companion – even if you've never spoken this way in your life; "Do be a dear and activate the audio system, would you?"

Hey, that's just how you roll in the Aston Martin DBS Volante.

See, a lot of cars are fast and a lot of cars are luxurious. A few (most of them British by the way) are both exceptionally fast and exceptionally luxurious. But the way the Aston Martin DBS Volante delivers its intoxicating blend of pulse pumping pace with unalloyed grace is simply unmatched by any other automaker.

And that's why its pricing starts at $323,195.
