Call it a sleek sedan or the new term for cars in this burgeoning segment, a four-door coupe. Call it whatever you want. Just don't call it ugly. The new 2011 Audi A7 is a beautiful car, without question.

This can be said for most four-door coupes on the market. As much as some critics pooh-pooh the idea, it really makes sense. Most luxury car buyers would rather have a sporty coupe than a sedan, but choose the four-door for practical reasons. The option of a four-door coupe lets them have their proverbial cake and eat it too.

Recent additions to the genre include Porsche's fabulous new Panamera, Aston's otherworldly Rapide, while Mercedes-Benz's stunning CLS, the forerunning in this segment, will soon be updated.

Audi showed its first four-door coupe design study dubbed Sportback Concept at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, to rave reviews, and moving from prototype to production there are certainly more similarities than differences.

Those who like the new A8 will be happy the A7 stays true to Audi's new design character. LEDs continue to be part of the frontal look, although they're more pronounced than ever thanks to a stylized light cluster that are also angled more forward than on other models. Like so many in this segment, the trunk is not a trunk as tall, but rather a liftback for improved cargo access as well as a rakish profile. Truly, the A7's rear quarters might be it's most attractive vantage point.

Audi will offer a variety of engines in Europe that won't be available here, which is hardly unusual. We should expect the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 that motivates the current S4, S5 and A6 models, plus the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 offering in the Q7 TDI. quattro all-wheel drive will be part of the package too.

The A7's cabin will no doubt be well executed, while features will include Audi's MMI Touch infotainment interface that will now connect through to wireless internet.

Audi hasn't made an official announcement for North America, but it is reportedly on its way.
