The upcoming 2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe is slated to debut at this year's Shanghai Motor Show in April, states AutoWeek's Netherlands division.

The sleek two-door coupe showed up at the 2010 Paris Motor Show last fall in concept form, and will bow in production trim in China before going on sale in late summer or early fall.

Reports are for 640i and/or 650i variants to be available first, with an M6 version to follow, while a convertible model will certainly be part of BMW's lineup in 2013.

The new 6 Series, if the production version is close to the prototype and with BMWs they usually are, pulls design cues from the original 6, and 8 Series that followed, particularly the thin A-pillar, arcing roofline, absence of a B-pillar, and C-pillar that features a more pronounced iteration of the brand's classic Hofmeister kink. The lower rear deck is a welcome return to the original 6 too, while its rounded edges remind of the 2800 and 3.0 CS coupes that preceded it. The 6 Series Coupe concept's L-shaped taillight design has long been a BMW trademark, and work well with the two-door luxury model's elegant proportions.

The current 6 Series Coupe, which was introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, had a lackluster reception and hasn't sold particularly well since. BMW hopes that the model's new styling direction, combining softer curves and more traditionally pleasing lines, wins BMW faithful back.
