The four-door luxury "coupe" segment is currently stocked with stylish vehicles such as Audi's A7, Aston Martin's Rapide and the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Now, BMW has released its own entry into this niche segment with the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe.

Power in the base 640i Gran Coupe comes from a BMW TwinPower Turbo 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine that develops 315 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. BMW says the Gran Coupe will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Fuel consumption according to the EU test cycle is rated at 7.8 L/100 km.

The more powerful 650i Gran Coupe is offered with a TwinPower 4.4-litre V8 engine that generates 445 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The power is good for a claimed 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 4.6 seconds, though the electronically-limited top speed of the 650i is just the same as the 640i's. Average fuel consumption for the 650i Gran Coupe is rated between 8.6 and 8.8 L/100 km depending on tire choice, according to the EU test cycle.

The V8 powered 650i Gran Coupe can also be had with xDrive all-wheel-drive which provides enhanced traction, stability and also a slightly faster acceleration time: The 650i xDrive Gran Coupe manages to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds compared to the 650i's 4.6 second time.

An 8-speed automatic transmission comes standard in the 6 Series Gran Coupe and can be manually shifted via steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.

Based on the latest generation 6 Series two-door coupe, the four-door Gran Coupe is 11 centimetres (4.4 inches) longer than the two-door and therefore affords more seating room for rear passengers. Inside, the 6 Series Gran Coupe cossets occupants with a 9-speaker audio system, and a 12-speaker system is available with the Premium Sound Package. While 12 speakers may be plenty, BMW also offers a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen surround sound system which was designed specifically for the 6 Series Gran Coupe.

BMW's 6 Series Gran Coupe can also be optioned with the BMW Individual range of customization products. Interior products from BMW Individual include an Alcantara roof liner, wood inlays for the steering wheel and Opal White and Amaro Brown full-leather trim which was developed specifically for the Gran Coupe. Conveniently, all BMW Individual items can be ordered individually, allowing for a true customization experience.

An M Sport package is also available for the 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe. It features an M aerodynamics package, black chrome exhaust tips, black-painted brake calipers, and a sports exhaust system. The package includes 19-inch light-alloy wheels, with 20-inch light-alloy wheels available as an upgrade. Interior features of the M Sport package include an M leather steering wheel, Alcantara/leather sports seats with blue contrast stitching and aluminum hexagon interior trim.

BMW's all-new 2013 6 Series Gran Coupe is scheduled to arrive this coming summer.
