When Bentley first introduced the Continental GT super coupe back in 2003, it represented a departure for the company from slightly old-fashioned limo-like sedans to something much sportier and youthful. Now Bentley is offering a V8 version of the originally V12-powered super coupe, which is sure to appeal to an even wider range of affluent and youthful consumers.

The new V8 will be available in the Continental GT coupe or the Continental GTC convertible. With a displacement of 4.0 litres, the twin turbocharged V8 delivers a monstrous 500 horsepower and 487 pound feet of torque and comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The awesome power allows the V8 to shoot from 0 to 100 km/h in less than five seconds and on to a top speed of over 290 km/h. To ensure stability, an all-wheel drive system is featured, splitting the engine's torque output 40:60 in favour of the rear wheels.

In order to improve efficiency, the V8 engine features variable displacement technology and can switch from V8 power to V4 power under light throttle loads. The engine also features high-pressure direct injection and low-friction bearings.

Both GT coupe and GTC convertible models are distinguished by black gloss grilles, red Bentley "B" badges and a black three-part lower front bumper with body-coloured strakes. A view of the rear reveals shiny chrome "figure-eight" style tailpipes housed in a rounded, almost hatchback rear end. Attractive 20-inch wheels come standard on both the GT and GTC, while 21-inch six-spoke wheels are optional and can be had in Diamond Black or Diamond Silver finishes.

The sumptuous interior boasts dark fiddleback eucalyptus veneer, Eliade cloth headlining and four different colours of leather as well as a two-tone leather option.

"With the new 4.0 litre V8 engine we are widening the appeal of the latest generation of Continentals, introducing a completely new driving experience." said Wolfgang Dürheimer, chairman and chief executive officer of Bentley Motors. "The new engine will have all the exhilarating power, drama and performance you would expect from a V8 engine sporting the famous Bentley wings, effortlessly delivered with our characteristic 'wave of torque.' This is complemented by innovative powertrain technology that delivers exceptional fuel efficiency and emissions."

The new Bentley will debut on January 9th, 2012 at the North American International Auto Show. While Bentley has not yet announced an on-sale date, the V8 is expected to be available later in 2012 as a 2013 model.
