General Motors has confirmed that the 2012 Buick LaCrosse, which arrives in dealerships later this year, will be available with a new version of its 3.6-litre V6 engine. The new engine will be significantly more powerful with an SAE (Society of Automotive Engineer) certified output of 303 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. The 2012 Buick LaCrosse will also be available with all-wheel-drive.

"The changes we've made to the 3.6L V6 represent greater refinements to an already well-balanced package," said Global V6 Chief Engineer Tom Sutter. "We are using the latest designs, lighter-weight components and enhancements to improve the engine's performance, efficiency and durability."

The new V6 makes use of a one-piece cylinder head and exhaust manifold that reduces engine weight by approximately 6 kilos (13 pounds) compared to the previous engine. The engine also features a new composite intake manifold that reduces weight by approximately 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds). In addition to the weight savings, the new engine features larger diameter engine intake valves and a longer intake duration, which allows for more air to be sucked into the combustion chamber for better combustion.

"As a result, there is more power without sacrificing fuel economy," Sutter explains. "The more-efficient combustion also means reduced emissions."

Like the previous engine, the new V6 uses direct fuel injection for improved combustion efficiency, but incorporates a new quieter fuel pump and isolated fuel rail. The quieter components help reduce the LaCrosse's "quiet-tuned operation" and the new direct injection system is claimed to reduce hydrocarbon emissions on cold starts by as much as 25 percent.

"Thanks to increased use of lightweight components and other enhancements, the new 3.6L V6 offers 2012 LaCrosse buyers improved acceleration with no hit to fuel efficiency," said LaCrosse Product Marketing Manager Doug Osterhoff. "This new engine is an attractive option on the car that's been widely hailed as one of the most attractive luxury sedans on the road today."
