When General Motors first unveiled its two-door Chevrolet Volt concept and then again later its four-door production version it also showed its Voltec electric car platform, which it promised would carry numerous vehicles in the future. Later, in 2009, GM debuted the Converj Concept, basically a coupe version of the Volt in Cadillac drag. Now that Converj has been restyled and renamed ELR and is teasing us all with a profile image ahead of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Cadillac isn't saying if the new ELR's powertrain will be identical to the Volt's or if will debut some new technologies to either increase performance or battery-powered distances traveled, but either way it will be built alongside Chevy's Volt at the General's Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Michigan starting next later next year.

No doubt Cadillac will enhance interior quality to premium standards and possibly increase features, although the top-line Volt already comes with all the latest tech so it will be difficult for the crested wreath brand to enhance it much over and above aesthetics.

When it debuts as a 2014 model later next year the ELR will be the first extended-range electric luxury coupe in the premium sector.
