You've got to hand it to General Motors. When a small number of brands are merely dabbling in the electric car business with a single model, the General is already expanding its Voltec offering to two very alluring models.

The Chevy Volt not only can deliver the 100-percent battery powered "fuel economy" electric buyers are looking for while simultaneously allowing for extended range travel thanks to its efficient gasoline engine, but in addition it's an attractive sport sedan with a well-built forward-thinking interior and plenty of performance. Take the entire Volt experience up a notch in style and refinement and you've got the new Cadillac ELR.

The first 2014 Cadillac ELR lined off the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant last week, albeit not for customers yet. These are early pre-production examples designed for testing purposes, engineers to probe and play with, and eventually early lead journalists to thrash about in. The ELR won't go into full production until later this coming fall.
