Chevrolet's replacement for its soon to be departed Aveo subcompact, the 2012 Sonic, will arrive in North American markets this fall. In anticipation, Chevrolet's U.S. division revealed some key features of the new car, and also announced an accessories package for the Sonic that it calls the Sonic Z-Spec portfolio.

The 2012 Sonic will be available as a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback. According to Chevrolet, the Sonic will have "class-leading rear-seat roominess and cargo space." The first of two available four-cylinder engines includes a standard 1.8-litre Ecotec unit which can be paired to a five-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. The 1.8-litre is said to deliver an estimated 135 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. The other engine is a turbocharged 1.4-litre Ecotec unit that generates an estimated 138 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet expects the 1.4-litre turbo engine to achieve 5.88 litres per kilometre during highway driving.

The Sonic Z-Spec portfolio allows customers the opportunity to customize their Sonics with a host of appealing accessories. Exterior accessories include a roof spoiler, mirror caps, a graphics package for the body panels, contrasting grille surrounds, and painted 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels. There's also a ground effects kit which features front, side, and rear extensions, as well as a silver coloured exhaust tip. Z-Spec interior accessories include aluminum sill plates and foot pedals.

"The new Z-Spec accessories reinforce Sonic's fun, youthful spirit," said Vice President of Chevrolet Marketing, Rick Scheidt. "Customization is particularly important with the customers we believe will gravitate toward the Sonic, and we want to help them make their vehicle look exactly the way they want as easily as possible."

Chevrolet says that Z-Spec accessories don't have to be purchased as a package and that customers can choose to purchase parts individually to suit their own tastes. In addition to those already mentioned, more accessories will be available for the Sonic. They include new graphics packages, plus chrome mirror caps and door handles.

The 2012 Sonic will debut with Z-Spec accessories on April 22nd at the New York International Auto Show. Production versions will arrive in showrooms across the continent this fall to take on well-established competitors like the Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit, and Nissan Versa, as well as other newcomers such as the Ford Fiesta and Mazda2.
