Concepts? Maybe that's what Honda is calling the Civic Si Concept coupe and Civic Concept sedan that recently rolled onto the brand's Detroit auto show stage, but in this case the line between concept and reality is rice paper thin.

Sounding more like a speech for the introduction of the actual production model than these concept cars, John Mendel, executive vice president of sales for American Honda expounded on the Civic's "balance of 'just-right' packaging, fun-to-drive character and outstanding fuel economy," before stating that the "redesigned Civic builds on this legacy and promises to be the best Civic yet."

The new duo, set to go on sale in April with a 2012 model designation, is a tauter, more expressive version of the current Civic lineup. To be clear, anyone who likes the Civic on sale now, will love the updated version, and those hankering for a return to the once-loved hatchback will once again have to move across the Atlantic or Pacific, or more practically opt for a Fit.

While Honda only showed its upcoming Si in two-door coupe guise, it will be available as a sedan as well. Likewise the regular Civic will come in both body types. Honda won't keep us waiting for any specific Civic variant either, as all will be available from the launch date, even the ultra-green natural gas-powered GX and Civic Hybrid models, both only available with four doors being that the brand's two-seat, two-door CR-Z meets the needs of hybrid sport coupe fans.

Bigger Civic Hybrid news is the replacement of the old nickel-metal hydride battery pack with a new-tech lithium-ion (Li-ion) unit, which should improve battery life while reducing manufacturing and recycling pollutants.

Gasoline-powered 2012 Civics will be the first in the North American Honda lineup to employ the brand's Eco Assist technology, which helps drivers to monitor speed and driving style in order to maximize fuel economy.

Unique Civic Si Concept coupe exterior details include a rear air diffuser, a centre-mounted exhaust outlet, and a rear deck lid spoiler with dual vents, while both concepts get 19-inch machined alloy wheels.

Along with the exterior makeovers will come new interiors, although Honda has yet to release any official photos.
