Honda's 2013 Accord Coupe Concept was recently introduced at this year's North American International Auto Show in Detroit. While it is strictly a concept car, the flashy Honda previews the styling and technology that will be featured in the forthcoming 2013 Accord.

The Accord Coupe Concept features a sleek, athletic exterior and a profile similar to the current, eighth-generation Accord Coupe. Exterior trinkets like giant exhaust tips, a smoothly integrated trunk-lid spoiler and 20-inch, 5-spoke wheels accentuate the sporty flair of this concept, but it's unlikely they'll be featured on the standard production version.

What definitely will be featured on the 2013 Accord, however, is a choice of three new powertrains. The first is an "Earth Dreams" 2.4-litre, 4-cylinder engine that generates more than 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. This engine will be paired to a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), and Accords specified with this powertrain are expected to achieve best-in-class fuel economy according to Honda.

A re-engineered 3.5-litre i-VTEC V6 engine is also available for the 2013 Accord. This new V6 is claimed to produce more horsepower and torque than the current version, which produces a stout 271 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. Transmission choices for the V6-equipped Accord include a 6-speed automatic transmission or an available 6-speed manual.

The third powertrain option is a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. The 2013 Accord Plug-In Hybrid uses a new two-motor hybrid system, with a 2.0-litre, i-VTEC 4-cylinder, Atkinson cycle gas engine and electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT). It can be operated in all-electric mode, gasoline-electric mode, and direct-drive mode. All-electric mode makes use of a 6 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and a 120 kW electric motor to power the Accord for a driving range of approximately 15 to 25 kilometres in city driving on electric power alone. Gasoline-electric mode makes use of the gasoline engine to generate power for the system. Direct-drive mode uses the gasoline engine to directly power the front wheels for high-speed cruising.

Other notable technologies of the 2013 Accord include a lane departure warning system, forward collision warning, "LaneWatch" blind-spot display, a multi-information display (i-MID) and the Honda Eco Assist system for improved efficiency. The 2013 Accord will also feature side curtain airbags with a wider area of deployment.

"This ninth-generation Accord will raise the bar again through a tour de force of new Honda powertrain and safety technologies, geared to ensure that Honda and the Accord continue to lead in fuel economy, safety and fun-to-drive performance," said Dave Jamieson, Assistant Vice president of Honda Auto Sales at Honda Canada Inc.

Gasoline-powered versions of Honda's ninth-generation Accord are scheduled to come to market this fall, with the Accord Plug-In Hybrid due to arrive next winter.
