Perhaps a novel innovation at first, hybrid technology now resides in sedans, hatchbacks and sport utility vehicles from various different manufacturers at various different price ranges. Simply put, hybrids pair an electric motor and motive battery to a conventional gasoline or diesel powertrain, and this assistance improves both fuel economy and power output. Hybrid technology is so popular in fact that it's being used in exotic supercars like the Porsche 918 and the upcoming Acura NSX. Infiniti is also delving into this realm with its Infiniti Emerg-E Concept which debuted at this year's Geneva Motor Show and is said to provide a glimpse into Infiniti's future.

According to Infiniti, the Emerg-E is a display of the Japanese automaker's intention to produce a "bold halo model" that uses new technologies in a campaign to create sustainable high performance automobiles. Apart from its styling and powertrain, the Emerg-E is also unique because it is the very first Infiniti to be developed in Europe.

The Emerge-E hybrid concept features two electric motors, a lithium-ion battery pack, four inverters and a mid-mounted, three-cylinder gasoline engine for increasing the driving range. The mid-engine exotic generates 402 horsepower and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in roughly four seconds and from zero to 200 km/h in approximately 30 seconds. In addition to its impressive speed and power, the Emerg-E can also operate in zero emissions electric-only mode for about 50 kilometres. When using both the electric motor and the gasoline engine, the Emerg-E will yield a CO2 output of 55 g/km.

Though the Emerg-E is a concept vehicle, Infiniti says it is a prelude to the company's future. So it should only be a matter of time before such a supercar arrives to do battle with perhaps its most natural rival, the similarly proportioned and forthcoming Acura NSX.
