While Jaguar's Canadian division didn't directly influence the creation of its latest 550-horsepower XKR-S super sports coupe, news of its impending arrival was nicely timed with results from Canadian Black Book that awarded the XK with its "2011 Best Retained Value Award" in the Premium Sports Car category.

The award places Porsche's 911 in second, a likely scenario if the new XKR-S went up against the 911 on the open road. Its supercharged 5.0-litre V8, with 502 pound-feet of torque, will accelerate the sleek two-door coupe to a terminal velocity of 300 km/h (186 mph) after passing 100 km/h in just over 4 seconds, not as quick as the 911 Turbo, but plenty fast for most peoples' performance requirements.

"The XKR-S is a bold and exciting new model for Jaguar," said Adrian Hallmark, Jaguar's new Global Brand Director. "We expect to attract both loyal and new Jaguar driving enthusiasts who still want the comfort, opulence and class only a Jaguar can offer, combined with inspirational performance."

The XK is already a dynamic performer in stock trim, while the XKR takes things up a solid few notches when the road starts to wind. According to Jaguar, the new XKR-S, with its retuned suspension, ups the ante further still.

Jaguar has modified the regular XKR's bodywork slightly too, with a new front fascia above the grille and revisions below including aerodynamic upgrades that wrap around the body and end with a tall wing atop the rear deck lid.

The new XKR-S debuted at the 2011 Geneva auto show last month, at which time Jaguar also celebrated 50 years of E-Type.
