As vehicle ownership becomes increasingly more expensive, many motorists are switching to car sharing programs for their urban commutes. Zipcar, a popular car sharing company with programs in the United Kingdom and North American has launched a new software application to improve the car sharing experience for its customers. The software application was designed to run on version 2.1 or higher of Google's popular Android operating system which is available on several different smartphones.

The new Android application allows Zipcar members to reserve their vehicles by specifying their time, vehicle type and location requirements. Members can also view available Zipcars on a map and get directions to the Zipcar of their choice. The Android application will even honk the horn of a Zipcar in order to help members locate their vehicles. The new application will also unlock and lock the car doors once the member's Zipcard is scanned into the system.

As impressive as it sounds, the new Zipcar Android application is only in its beta stage, meaning it's still undergoing testing. Zipcar members are invited to send their feedback to the company –which can be done directly through the application – in order to make sure the final version works as well as possible. The application can be downloaded at and members are also invited to visit in order to find answers to any questions they may have about using the new Android application.
"We conducted a member study in December 2010, and found that more than 90 percent of Zipsters use smartphones, with a large increase in the share of Android-powered devices compared to prior studies. The launch of this public beta gives us the opportunity to learn from thousands of members using a wide variety of Android devices to gather feedback on their user experience," said Zipcar Chairman and CEO Scott Griffith.

The new Android application is the latest addition to Zipcar's suite of mobile solutions, which also includes an Apple iPhone application as well as a mobile website for Blackberry users. Two-way SMS texting is also offered and allows vehicles to contact members during their reservation periods.

With over 560,000 members, over 8,000 vehicles, and more than 30 different makes and models throughout North America and the United Kingdom, Zipcar is determined to grow its car sharing business. Its impressive suite of mobile solutions including the latest Android smartphone app will only help the company popularize car sharing amongst new and experienced members.
