Earlier this week it was reported that the Infiniti M35h had set a Guinness World Record for its acceleration and ironically, another hybrid sedan has set another world record. The 2011 Kia Optima Hybrid has recently earned the Guinness World Record for the "Lowest fuel consumption driving through all 48 contiguous U.S. states in a gasoline hybrid car."
Wayne Gerdes of Wadsworth, Illinois and Chris Benius of New York City are credited with successfully driving the Kia through all 48 adjoining U.S. states. According to the Guinness World Record guidelines, the Optima Hybrid needed to carry two occupants and their luggage for the entire journey. The trek began at Kia's manufacturing plant in West Point, Georgia, where they headed clockwise to end their journey 12,712 km later in Greenville, South Carolina. Throughout the trip Kia says the Optima Hybrid achieved an average fuel consumption of 3.64 l/100 km.

"The Kia Optima Hybrid was the perfect vehicle for this long road trip. It is spacious, comfortable and fun-to-drive, and the parallel gasoline-electric powertrain provided considerable efficiency at highway speeds and the car performed flawlessly throughout the 12,712 kilometre drive." said Wayne Gerdes, one of the record-breaking drivers.

Kia's Optima Hybrid is powered by a 2.4-litre inline 4-cylinder engine that's been paired to an AC permanent-magnet electric motor. Together, the two power sources generate 206 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The engine is connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission and U.S. EPA fuel economy is rated at 35 miles per gallon (6.72 L/100km) in the city and 40 miles per gallon (5.88 L/100km) on the highway.

Thomas Oh, Senior Executive Vice President and COO of Kia Motors Corporation, had the following to say of the Optima Hybrid's recent world record: "Kia Motors is deeply proud to have set a new Guinness World Record. It is testament to the quality of the design, engineering and production methods of the Kia Optima Hybrid. The drivers had to complete their unsupported drive through all kinds of American terrain and weather conditions and they did it without a single hitch from the Optima Hybrid while setting what is such an impressive fuel consumption figure."
