Kia's Sorento sport utility vehicle is currently in its second generation and competes with other mid-size SUVs including the Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Santa Fe. Though it is a popular model for Kia, the second-generation Sorento was introduced way back in 2009 and, as such, will be updated with a host of revisions expected to debut for model year 2014.

The updated Sorento will feature what Kia says are "enhanced powertrains for best-in-class fuel economy with lower emissions." In light of this, it's likely these enhancements will be made to the Sorento's existing 2.4 and 3.5-litre engines. Presently, the Sorento's 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the current 3.5-litre V6 is good for 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque.

In addition to the enhanced powertrains, Kia also claims improvements in the Sorento's ride, handling and refinement as well as additional convenience and safety features. The Sorento's exterior styling will be revised to include new headlights with LED positioning lights, a new tailgate design with LED rear combination lights, new front and rear bumpers and also new optional 19-inch wheels.

As before, the revised Sorento's interior can accommodate either five or seven passengers depending on the vehicle specification. Changes include more soft-touch surfaces as well as a new LCD instrument cluster. Updated Sorentos will also feature a new centre stack with an integrated seven-inch display screen, and the optional panoramic roof will be larger than before.

"Since its introduction in 2009, the second-generation Kia Sorento has achieved more than 620,000 sales around the world," commented Thomas Oh, Kia's executive vice president and COO of the International Business Division. "We have given very careful attention to owners' feedback, and the upgraded Sorento is not just a cosmetic exercise but a major step forward for our popular SUV."
