At first glance, the Cross GT concept being teased here in a purposely-vague single image looks like Kia's version of the popular Hyundai Veloster sports coupe, but according to Kia's press release that just can't be. In an associated press release Kia says the Cross GT is actually larger than its popular seven-passenger Sorento crossover SUV.

"Inspired by nature, driven by technology, the Cross GT hints at the future of Kia's design language in the form of a premium Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) that is larger than the new 2014 Sorento," said Kia's press release.

With close to full-size dimensions and up to three rows of seats the Cross GT could very well offer up an extremely unique take on family hauling if it gets a welcome reception at its Chicago auto show debut next month and Kia in turn decides to build it.

With an eye on the premium CUV segment the Cross GT is likely tweaked with luxury levels of refinement and features, targeting vehicles like the Toyota Venza and more directly the Honda Crosstour, albeit with more seating flexibility than either and arguably more appealing styling than the latter.

That design includes a bold interpretation of Kia's "tiger nose" corporate grille, narrow LED-enhanced headlight clusters, bulging fender flares and a raked profile that ends in Kia's now trademark up-kicked D-pillar. Intriguing to say the least, the Cross GT looks like it could woo X6 crossover buyers away from BMW.

Other than Kia's extremely abbreviated press release details are non-existent, so we'll have to wait until the Cross GT debuts in February to fill in some very large blanks. Stay tuned...
