How successful has Lamborghini been under Audi's guiding hand and deep pocketbooks? Now we can quantify it into five figures, no less. Automobili Lamborghini has sold 10,000 Gallardo models since the mid-engine sports car's availability in 2003.

"The Lamborghini brand is extreme, uncompromising and Italian, and the Lamborghini Gallardo has played an exemplary role in defining and delivering our brand reputation into our worldwide markets," said Stephan Winkelmann, President and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini.

Lamborghini sold more than 5,000 Gallardos in its first three years of production, and in 2006 added the Spyder roadster model to the original Coupe body style. Lamborghini has continued to update the car with the latest technologies and finishes it high quality materials and craftsmanship. Increasing Lamborghini's marketplace reach more than twenty-fold since inception, the Gallardo plays a critical roll in the Italian 47 year old firm.

"Today Lamborghini is represented in 45 countries by over 120 dealers, with the strength and presence of the Gallardo product playing a significant role in the growth and recognition of our brand," added Winkelmann.

The V10-powered Gallardo wasn't in existence when Audi took the reins at Sant'Agata Bolognese from Malaysia's V'Power and Mycom Sedtco in 1998, and neither was the beautiful and exotic V12-powered Murciélago flagship. While the Murciélago and its Roadster counterpart remain seldom seen rarities in most neighbourhoods, the Gallardo is becoming a much more common sighting.

"We feel obligated to point out that such success in the marketplace is something of a double-edged sword for Lamborghini," continued Winkelmann. "One reason exotic machines from manufacturers like Lamborghini have been so revered in the past is due to their rarity and exclusivity. One the flip side, small-scale automakers simply cannot continue to compete on a global scale without runaway success stories like the Gallardo."

Lamborghini mirrors the success Bentley has enjoyed under the Volkswagen/Audi umbrella, albeit in completely different ultra-premium markets; Volkswagen also owns the Bugatti and Porsche brands, amongst more mainstream nameplates such as Seat, from Spain, and Skoda, originally Czech.
