While most carmakers are busy introducing their 2012 models, Lexus has already got a jump on 2013, having recently debuted the 2013 GS 350 sedan at California's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The Japanese automaker announced that the new luxury sedan will come to market in 2012, and in addition to the GS 350 Lexus also plans to release a hybrid version and even an F Sport version of the car.

The 2013 GS 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 306 horsepower and mated to a 6-speed sequential shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The engine and transmission work together to propel the new Lexus from 0 to 100 km/h in a respectably quick 5.7 seconds.

Four driving modes are available in the new GS via the new Lexus Drive Mode selector. They include Normal mode, ECO mode, SPORT S mode and SPORT S + mode. While Normal mode works well for routine driving, ECO mode revises the throttle mapping, climate control and even the seat heating feature all in a bid to improve fuel economy. SPORT S mode again changes the throttle mapping but also the transmission response all in order to make better use of the powertrain. In SPORT S + mode, all of the advantages of SPORT S mode are incorporated as well as revisions the the vehicle's suspension that are claimed to make for better handling.

Though the new GS comes standard in rear-wheel drive, an all-wheel-drive option is available as well. It varies front-to-rear torque from 50/50 up to a rear-wheel bias of up to 30/70 depending on driving conditions.

Interior amenities abound in the new GS, including DVD audio and video compatibility, a 5.1 Surround Sound system, an eight-inch central display and Interior amenities include DVD audio and video compatibility, a 5.1 Surround Sound system, and an eight-inch central display. Notable options include an 835-watt, 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system with 7.1 Surround Sound and also a navigation system with a giant 12.3-inch split-screen multi-media display.

Safety features include no less than 10 airbags, a night vision system to enhance nighttime visibility, a blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, a lane departure warning system and even a heads-up display.

"Today, buyers in the mid-size luxury segment want a more engaging driving experience, styling that makes a statement, and a roomier interior package," said Mark Templin, Lexus Group vice president and general manager. "With the all-new GS, we're giving them what they asked for, and more."
