At this month's New York International Auto Show, Lexus revealed its sixth-generation ES luxury sedan for the 2013 model year. Available as the gasoline-powered ES 350 or the gasoline-electric ES 300h hybrid, the 2013 ES boasts new styling and technology, inside and out.

The 2013 ES comes to market bearing Lexus's familiar new spindle grille, LED daytime running lights and a wheelbase lengthened by 46 mm (1.8 inches). Inside, rear seat knee room has been increased by 71 mm (2.8 inches) while rear legroom grows by 104 mm (4.1 inches). In spite of its larger proportions, the 2013 ES weighs nearly 41 kg less than before. Lexus has also revised the vehicle's suspension in order to enhance straight-line stability and ride comfort. All 2013 ES sedans will come with standard 17-inch alloy wheels or available 18-inch high-gloss alloys.

A 3.5-litre V6 engine provides power for the ES 350 and comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The ES 300h hybrid's powertrain combines a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine with an electric motor, and features four driving modes including Normal, Sport, Eco and EV. Normal mode is meant to provide a blend of efficiency and performance while Sport mode increases powertrain responsiveness. Eco mode puts an emphasis on conserving fuel, and EV mode allows the ES 300h to operate for short distances and at reduced speeds using only energy from the hybrid battery pack. Further detailed information regarding the horsepower, torque and fuel-economy for the ES 350 and ES 300h was not divulged at this time.

Stepping inside the new ES sedan reveals a second-generation Remote Touch Interface that enables users to control the vehicle's climate, audio system, phone controls, optional navigation system and more. The 2013 ES comes standard with an eight-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System with USB, Apple iPod and Bluetooth connectivity as well as a SiriusXM receiver. An available Display Audio package includes a seven-inch screen, rear-view camera, HD radio with iTunes tagging, Bluetooth audio and a vehicle information display. The optional HDD navigation system allows for operation via voice command and comes with an integrated rear-view camera as well. One other notable option is a 15-speaker Mark Levinson audio system which includes an eight-inch display screen, HD radio with iTunes tagging, a SiriusXM receiver, and DVD audio and video.

The 2013 ES comes equipped with 10 airbags including driver and front passenger knee and front airbags and also rear seat-mounted side and curtain airbags. For increased safety, the 2013 ES can be equipped with an available blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, an available lane departure alert and an available pre-collision system .

"The Lexus ES brought new levels of refinement, sophistication and quality to the entry luxury segment when it entered the market in 1989, and through the years it has consistently been a sales leader for us," said Mark Templin, Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager. "Now, with both gas and hybrid versions, the 2013 ES promises to lead Lexus forward once again."
