Lexus, the luxury vehicles division of Toyota Motor Corporation, has recently updated its RX crossover sport utility vehicle for 2013, and now production is due to increase right here in Canada.

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada Inc. (TMMC) will invest over $100 million in its Cambridge, Ontario assembly plant and hire approximately 400 employees in order to boost RX production. The announcement increases Toyota's direct job creation in Canada by 800 new employees for a total of 7,300, according to the Japanese automaker. Toyota adds that overall RX capacity will increase by 30,000 vehicles for a total of 104,000 RX models produced annually.

"For almost nine years now, Canada has had the only Lexus production outside of Japan," stated TMMC Chairman, Ray Tanguay. "New jobs, along with new technology, is great news for Canada."

Toyota plans to expand production of the RX in early 2014.

"Our government's top priority is creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity, and we are pleased to see Toyota expanding production at its Cambridge facility," said the Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry. "Canada is a great place to build vehicles, and we will continue to encourage investment by providing tax relief, eliminating tariffs on machinery and equipment, and creating an environment that promotes innovation, research and development."

Power for the current 2013 RX 350 comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine that churns out 270 horsepower and comes mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. For those who require four-wheel traction, the RX 350 AWD uses an Active Torque Control all-wheel drive system to vary torque distribution anywhere from 100:0 to 50:50 between the front and rear wheels depending on road conditions and the way the SUV is being driven.

The hybrid RX 450h uses a 3.5-litre V6 Atkinson-cycle engine as well as electric motors for total net output of 295 horsepower, and can be operated in electric-only mode at low speeds. The RX 450h also features a Sport mode that changes the characteristics of the steering, throttle mapping and transmission-shifting priorities to "fully exploit the capabilities of the powertrain," said Lexus in a press release.

Optional luxury features include a 12-speaker audio system, a 15-speaker Mark Levinson surround sound audio system, an available hard disc drive navigation system, a rear-seat entertainment system with two seven-inch screens, and a rear-view camera. Lexus says there's also a sport appearance package available for 2013 that includes halogen headlights, 19-inch wheels with a superchrome finish, and a unique front bumper.
