Maserati's GranTurismo grand touring coupe was introduced in 2007 as a replacement for the aging Maserati Coupé. Now, some five years after its initial introduction, it is the GranTurismo that has become aged in an automotive segment that is rife with other, antiquated competitors such as Jaguar's XK and Aston Martin's V8 Vantage. However, Maserati recently introduced a new version of the GranTurismo, which helps to keep the grand touring car up to date and competitive. It's called the GranTurismo Sport.

The new Maserati debuted at this month's Geneva Motor Show and features new styling and more power. Within the GranTurismo range, the Sport slots above the base GranTurismo and just below the top-of-the-range GranTurismo MC Stradale, with which it shares most of its performance specifications according to European-spec data.

In fact, the horsepower, torque and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in both the Sport and MC Stradale are the same, though there is a slight difference in top speed: The Sport achieves a top speed of 300 km/h while the MC Stradale earns a barely-there advantage of 301 km/h. From its 4.7-litre V8 engine, the new GranTurismo Sport develops 460 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and it will hit 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

To improve its functionality, the Sport has a new front fascia that optimizes air flow to the engine and the brakes. Other exterior features include new LED headlights and new, darker taillights. The interior too has been revised with changes that include a new steering wheel and redesigned front and rear seats for this four-seat grand tourer.

Though it was originally introduced approximately five years ago, the GranTurismo's latest iteration helps to increase the appeal of this grand touring car. The GranTurismo Sport will go on sale in North America as a 2013 model and will likely please many with its exotic styling, sumptuous interior and of course, its abundant power.
