McLaren Automotive is the British firm responsible for the legendary F1 supercar. Although the F1 is no longer produced, McLaren now builds the MP4-12C, which primarily competes with Ferrari's lusty 458 Italia. Introduced in 2011, the mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive 12C has been upgraded for 2013 with more power and revised styling inside and out.

Power from the 12C's twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine goes up from 592 to 616 horsepower for 2013, while torque output is rated at 443 pound-feet. The 12C's SSG (Sequential Shift Gearbox) 7-speed transmission has also been revised to provide improved clutch control for gear changes that are now faster and smoother.

To ensure the perfect balance between driver engagement and comfort in all driving conditions, McLaren's MP4-12C has an intake sound generator that controls engine intake noise within the cabin depending on the vehicle's powertrain mode selection. Normal, Sport and Track powertrain modes provide progressively louder levels of engine noise for an increasingly engaged driving experience. An electronic menu allows further fine-tuning of the system by letting the driver adjust the level of engine noise transmitted into the cabin in each mode.

To make the MP4-12C easier to live with on a day-to-day basis, there's a new entry system for 2013 that uses small buttons on each door instead of the previous touch sensors. There's also a vehicle lift option that raises the suspension for more ground clearance when driving over undulating roads or when negotiating speed bumps, ramps and other sharp changes in the road surface.

Volcano Yellow joins the "Elite" set of paint finishes for 2013 along with Volcano Orange and Volcano Red. Another option includes new five-spoke lightweight forged wheels that can be finished in Standard Silver, Diamond Cut Graphite Grey or a Stealth finish.

A new interior trim package is also available for 2013 and comes in three levels: The first trim level is a full semi-aniline leather package, while the second trim level features semi-aniline leather with colour perforated inserts. Level three provides semi-aniline leather with Alcantara inserts. The 12C's Meridian audio system is also revised with Pure, Expanded and Extreme settings for the audio equalizer, which progressively enhance bass and treble levels.

Though 2013 MP4-12Cs will feature several revisions over last year's model, purchasers of earlier cars won't miss out because McLaren will offer a list of upgrades for current owners free of charge. The upgrades include the power increase to 616 horsepower, revised calibration to the transmission and the programmable intake sound generator among other upgrades. This essentially brings existing 12Cs up to date with the improved 2013 model.

"Given our racing heritage, it is in our nature to continuously seek out improvements," commented Antony Sheriff, managing director at McLaren Automotive. "The team at McLaren Automotive recognizes that our existing and future customers deserve the very best product and service we can offer, and the launch of the enhanced 12C reaffirms its position as the most powerful luxury sports car among its competitor set."
