Mercedes-Benz is credited with initiating the four-door coupe craze, its beautiful CLS a forerunner of a segment that has now grown to include most premium brands and even some entry-level ones.  Time to replace this model is nearing, however, and the brand's latest concept, introduced at the Geneva motor show this week, appears to be what's in store.

Mercedes' F800 Style Concept is appropriately named, as it's a true head-turner.  If you like what you see that's a good thing, as it is reportedly the new face of Mercedes-Benz; or at least the brand's sporting façade.  What's under the skin is also a sign of the times.

Mercedes once pooh-poohed hybrid technology for clean diesel, and while the automaker hasn't slowed its progress in purifying Rudolf's internal combustion invention, it has embraced hybrid technology as well with its new S400 Hybrid leading the way on the production front.  The F800 Style Concept, however, takes things to an entirely new level.

First and foremost the new concept is of the plug-in variety, not only capable of solely running on electric power for a total of 29 km (18 miles) before its internal combustion engine (ICE) kicks in to recharge the battery packs and take the car to higher speeds, but also capable of running solely on electric power for a lot longer.  The F800 Style's ICE is a 272hp V6 using gasoline rather than diesel, and while this merely sounds adequate in a car the size of a CLS, its electric motor increases output over the 400hp threshold.  Mercedes also mentions that it could incorporate a fuel cell powertrain too, although this is not an uncommon statement from a hybrid maker, being that hybrids were often thought of as stopgaps to fuel cell usage before they became the mainstream mainstays they are now.

Inside the flowing greenhouse is a compelling interior stuffed to the gills with all the latest Mercedes technology, including a futuristic version of the brand's COMAND control system.  A new touchpad actually records real-time video of the users hand as it uses the device and displays it in a transparent on a screen above, helpful in allowing the driver to keep eyes on the road while using the interface below.

Additionally, the F800 Style debuts an advanced Distronic Plus safety system that gets upgrades for use during congested traffic plus gets 360-degree capability for its Pre-Safe system that now preempts rear collisions.  If a potential rear end impact is detected it will apply the brakes to prevent forward movement into another car or pedestrians.  A driver can override the system by pressing the throttle, mind you.
