Apart from the S-Class sedan, the SL sports car is the most iconic vehicle Mercedes-Benz currently makes. First introduced in 1954, the sixth-generation version was recently revealed as the 2013 SL550.

The new SL is constructed almost entirely from aluminum and, depending on its specification, is lighter than its predecessor by as much as 140 kg (308 pounds). Power for the 2013 SL550 comes from a twin-turbocharged 4.7-litre (4,663cc) V8 engine that generates 429 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The engine also features a start/stop function to reduce wasteful idling and comes mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. With its power and gearing, the 2013 SL550 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (approximately 100 km/h) in 4.5 seconds according to Mercedes-Benz - nearly a second quicker than the fifth-generation car.

Technology features abound in the new SL and include a "Comand" infotainment system complete with Internet access. The Internet access feature is available when the vehicle is stationary and allows for use of Google Local Search, Yelp and Facebook as well as Internet browsing. The Comand system even includes a DVD changer, with media being relayed to a high-resolution, 7-inch TFT colour display screen.

Notable standard safety technologies include Attention Assist (a "drowsiness detection system") and Adaptive Brake. The Adaptive Brake system utilizes anti-lock brakes and also acceleration skid control (ASR) and active yaw control to support critical driving manoeuvres.

Optional safety features available for the new SL include Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control with Pre-safe Brake. The Pre-safe Brake feature autonomously applies the brakes if the driver doesn't react to an oncoming collision while the adaptive cruise control is engaged. In this way, the system can reduce or eliminate the chance of a collision.

To provide the best in both open-top and closed-top motoring, the new SL can be outfitted with two kinds of retractable hardtop roofs. The first is a glass roof and the second features what Mercedes-Benz calls Magic Sky Control - this technology allows the roof to change from being totally transparent to completely dark with the push of a button.

"There are around 900 million cars in the world and thousands of models. But there is only a handful of automotive icons," commented Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars. "Our SL is one of them: It has class, it has style, it is the ultimate in comfort and luxury. And it combines all that with an incredibly sporty and dynamic character. You would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb Daimler's aspiration more perfectly than our new SL - the best or nothing."
