The Mercedes-Benz GL is a seven-seat luxury sport utility vehicle which contends with other such vehicles as Audi's Q7 and BMW's X5. For 2013, Mercedes-Benz is scheduled to launch a high-performance version of the GL that will be called the GL 63 AMG.

AMG is a specialized division of Mercedes-Benz that develops high-performance models such as the current C 63 AMG, CLS 63 AMG and the SLS AMG Coupe. The 2013 GL 63 AMG makes use of a 5.5-litre biturbo V8 engine that develops 550 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. This supercar-like power output is good for an acceleration time from 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

4Matic permanent all-wheel drive comes standard on the GL 63 AMG and distributes power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60. Also standard is an AMG SpeedShift Plus 7G-Tronic automatic transmission with three modes. Controlled Efficiency (C) mode allows for use of an Eco start/stop function that temporarily shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop. In Sport (S)
mode and Manual (M) mode, the powertrain is optimized for "greater agility with more spontaneous responses" according to Mercedes-Benz and the Eco start/stop function is not available.

Other features of the GL 63 AMG include an advanced sports suspension system with AMG Ride Control and an active roll stabilization system. The suspension also utilizes an Airmatic package with air suspension, automatic level control, special damper struts and an adaptive damping system. Like the transmission, the GL 63 AMG's suspension also has three modes which include "Comfort", "Sport" and "Sport plus."

The 2013 GL 63 AMG is mounted on 21-inch, 5-twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels and features AMG-exclusive bodywork such as a front end with large air intake openings for effective cooling. An AMG sports exhaust system is housed at the rear of the vehicle and provides both visual and acoustic delights.

Looking inside reveals leather upholstery for all seven seats while the dashboard, armrests and door panels are outfitted with Artico synthetic leather. As an option, these same components can be covered in designo leather as part of the GL 63 AMG's designo Exclusive package. Other luxurious amenities include a central colour monitor as well as a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system. There's also an AMG Performance four-spoke steering wheel with a flattened bottom section. It features perforated leather grips and aluminum shift paddles for manual control of the powertrain.

Additional features include active parking assist, crosswind assist, brake assist, collision prevention assist, Distronic Plus autonomous cruise control, as well as active lane keeping assist and active blind spot assist.

More details such as pricing for the 2013 GL 63 AMG will be available closer to its market introduction, which is scheduled for the first half of 2013.
