Some concepts border on the radical while others look ready for production before they even debut, the latter being the case for the attractive new Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept.

Just a few days ahead of the Shanghai auto show, images of the GLA Concept have arrived on the interweb and the model seems to make sense for Mercedes' sales floor. A wagon-like crossover SUV based on the back of the A-Class hatchback and CSA four-door coupe would target entry-level premium buyers in search of a small but luxurious alternative to Mercedes' current compact, midsize and full-size crossover lineup, in similar fashion to how BMW now targets such buyers with its less gracefully penned X1.

The GLA Concept shares an identical wheelbase to the A-Class hatchback, but its dimensions are larger overall, which will make for accommodating seating and cargo capacities.

And according to Carscoop, a production version will hit the Frankfurt auto show stage this coming fall with sales beginning in 2014. It won't likely include the concept's 20-inch rims and tires in base trim, but powertrains should include Mercedes' 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder along with a thriftier diesel variant here in North America, while a choice of six-speed manual and seven-speed dual-clutch automated transmissions will send power to the axles.

Along with such fuel-efficient engine options, Mercedes will also offer a GLA45 AMG version making upwards of 300-horsepower.

Expect more details of what powers the GLA Concept version when it debuts this weekend, along with other specifics of course.
