There's no more important luxury car than the S-Class, both to the full-size four-door flagship segment on the whole and to its builder, Mercedes-Benz, so a leaked official image of the next-generation 2014 model is big news indeed.

The new model, internally designated W222, has already been caught on camera by spy photographers, but this is the first official exterior image and it looks identical to the car in the spy photos; the S-Class' interior was revealed previously. The new S-Class appears more conservatively penned than the current model, sans pontoon fenders up front and also devoid of some of the brand's questionable new styling details such as the multi-curved integrated mirror cap turn signals. Even more reference to Mercedes' Formula 1 efforts can be seen in the lower valance, while the grille is as bold and dominant as ever. Unfortunately no rear photo has been leaked, but expect it to look identical to shots of the car's exterior taken by spy photographers.

While the design might be conservative Mercedes-Benz isn't playing its meek card in speaking about the new S-Class, promising "the best automobile in the world" in press material that previously accompanied interior photos. Mercedes will no doubt back up that claim with even better interior quality than the current model now that the ultra-luxe Maybach brand is no longer in the Daimler AG offering. Mercedes will not only be going head-to-head with Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Lexus and others in the more mainstream premium segment, but also Bentley and Rolls-Royce in the ultra-premium sector.

We already know it will bring the new S to market with state-of-the-art technologies, starting with twin high-resolution colour displays in 8:3 format with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches replacing the old model's analog and digital primary gauge cluster. The screen on the left will house analog-style digital dials while the right-side display will incorporate the infotainment system, which will feature Mercedes' new mBrace2 cloud-based entertainment and information delivery system.

Depending on trim level the new S-Class might just offer more excitement for rear passengers than the driver, with an extended ottoman as well as "energizing" massage. Likewise all will be royally pampered with active seat ventilation incorporating reversing fans, and heated seat cushions, while the driver will receive a heated steering wheel and heated armrests on the door and centre console. Mercedes will make sure the new S-Class is comfortable too, with 14 separately actuated air bladders in the backrests of its seats allowing six different massage programs.

Similar to the airbags integrated into the seatbelts of a Ford Explorer, the new S-Class will ante up safety with "beltbags" while "cushionbags" prevent each occupant from sliding below the belt.

Mercedes has taken its "Thermotronic" climate control system up a notch with autonomous adjustment options for driver and passenger plus enhanced filtering by way of ionization. What's more, the Stuttgart-based luxury brand will also offer "active perfuming" as part of the Air-Balance package, which allows for individual customization of the car's interior fragrance.

Only time behind the wheel will be able to attest to Mercedes' claim of being the best automobile in the world, but the 2014 S-Class appears to be on the right track.
