The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show serves as a showcase for new and upcoming production cars from manufacturers around the world, but it's not all business: Providing a welcome contrast to the slew of real-world, production-ready models are the sensationally styled concept cars. These are usually the stuff of fantasy, but often provide a genuine glimpse into the future of motoring.

This is definitely true of the Mercedes-Benz F 125! 4-seat concept vehicle. It was named in honour of 125 years of the automobile by Mercedes-Benz and yes, it does have an exclamation point at the end of its name. Mercedes-Benz has been building cars since 1886 and though the F 125! pays tribute to over 100 years of motoring history for the German automaker, it is also being used as a research vehicle to help anticipate future trends for premium automobiles.

"With the F 125! we want to show that large, comfortable and safe saloon cars have an excellent future, partly because they are able to operate with no emissions. The legend that is the S-Class will continue into the future thanks to intelligent solutions that always have the customer's needs in mind," said Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG. "The new research vehicle illustrates and underlines this claim to leadership with innovative ideas and traditional Mercedes strengths in the areas of design, safety, comfort and performance."

The S-Class is the most coveted 4-door sedan in the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup and has been for decades. It's expected that some of the features exhibited in the F 125! may be commonplace in the S-Class of the future.

The F 125!'s powertrain consists of a hydrogen tank, fuel cell stack, lithium-sulphur high-voltage battery and individual electric motors for each of the four wheels. The system is claimed to yield a continuous power output of 231 horsepower and a peak power output of 313 horsepower. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in 4.9 seconds and the F 125!'s top speed is a very respectable 220 km/h.

The F 125! features stellar fuel economy and consumes just 0.79 kg of hydrogen for every 100 km of travel. This gives it a driving range of 1,000 km according to Mercedes-Benz, 50 km of which can be traveled solely under battery-electric power.

Other innovations include a lightweight bodyshell, which incorporates fibre-reinforced plastics as well as carbon-fibre, aluminum and high-strength steel.

Inside, the F 125! features truly futuristic styling, with 3D projector-beam displays and next-generation telematics for voice control and entertainment functions. The innovative concept car is even outfitted with Advance Driving Assist which enables semi-autonomous driving. Of course, Mercedes-Benz's iconic gull-wing doors are also part of the package - a nod to the past in a car that highlights the not-too-distant future of the Mercedes-Benz luxury sedan.
