With over 500 horsepower on tap, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in under five seconds, the Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG is supercar quick. AMG's version of the new third-generation M-Class is scheduled to debut at the Los Angeles International Auto Show on November 18 but the details of this power-laden SUV are available now.

Power for the brutish ML 63 AMG is provided by a 5.5-litre biturbo V8 engine that produces 518 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. If that's not enough, an available AMG Performance Package raises maximum charge pressure from 14 to 18.8 psi, which increases output to 550 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque. An AMG Speedshift Plus 7-speed automatic transmission comes mated to the biturbo engine.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is rated at just 4.7 seconds and the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Acceleration and top speed figures improve to 4.6 seconds and 280 km/h with the AMG Performance Package.

Fuel economy with or without the AMG Performance Package is rated at 14.7 L/100 km. While that's hardly impressive, the new ML 63 AMG actually manages a 33 percent improvement in fuel economy over the previous second-generation version according to Mercedes-Benz. Additionally, the new ML 63 AMG is 45 kg lighter than its predecessor, despite having more power and more standard equipment.

Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC permanent all-wheel-drive is standard on the ML 63 AMG and distributes engine power in a 40:60 ratio between the front and rear wheels respectively. There's also an AMG sports suspension with Airmatic air suspension, an adaptive damping system and an active curve system which provides active roll stabilization.

The ML 63 AMG's sculpted body is mounted on 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels, and 21-inch alloys are optional. Inside, the AMG's power-operated sport seats, armrests, dashboard and door trim are all covered in Mercedes-Benz "designo" premium leather with double topstitching. Drivers sit in front of a four-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather grips and aluminum paddle shifters. The interior also features a harman/kardon Logic 7 surround sound system and a seven-inch display screen.

"Like its predecessors, the 2012 ML 63 AMG sets new standards in terms of performance, exclusivity and an outstanding driving experience – plus the efficiency factor, which is acquiring ever greater emphasis at Mercedes-AMG," said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "As the inventor of the high-performance SUV, we remain true to the philosophy which we introduced in 1999 with the 2000 model year ML 55 AMG and continued with the 2007 model year ML 63 AMG."

After it officially debuts at the L.A Auto Show this month, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG will go on sale in the first quarter of 2012.
