British automakers MINI and Rolls-Royce, both owned by German company BMW, recently unveiled the awkwardly named MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD limited production model at this year's Auto Shanghai in China. The new MINI is offered as part of the MINI Yours range of special edition vehicles and options.

The MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD has been conceived by the Rolls-Royce development centre in Goodwood, England, which worked in collaboration with the MINI plant in Oxford and also BMW's development centre in Munich. Only a thousand units will be produced. The MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD is said to blend the driving flair of MINI with the high quality craftsmanship of Rolls-Royce. It's an interesting combination, and one that is sure to impress owners who will take delivery of the new model in spring 2012.

The interior of the car bears the most significant influences from Rolls-Royce. While the styling is still typically MINI, the materials used throughout are much richer in appearance and texture. The dashboard and door handles are made from genuine burr walnut trim, black nappa leather covers the top of the dash, and the seats are draped in Cornsilk beige leather.

The exterior is finished in Rolls-Royce Diamond Black paint, and unique 17-inch alloy wheels add to the bespoke styling. MINI also offers its Reef Blue metallic paint as an option to the Diamond Black paint scheme.

The unique MINI is distinguished by aluminum badges that read, "MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD." The badges have been placed near the side indicators and on the doorsills. Other features include more common items like Xenon Adaptive Headlights, a harman/kardon speaker system, and Park Distance Control.

Power for the MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD is provided by a turbocharged l.6-litre four-cylinder engine which first debuted in the 2011 MINI Cooper S. It's quite advanced and features a Twin Scroll turbocharger, variable valve control, and direct injection. The engine produces 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, which can be increased to 192 pound-feet via Overboost. Those figures allow the MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD to go from zero to 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds.

Combined highway and city fuel economy for the six-speed manual transmission is equivalent to 7.84 L/100km according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While the manual transmission is offered as standard, customers have the option to choose an available six-speed automatic as well.

The MINI INSPIRED BY GOODWOOD is offered through the MINI Yours range of specialty vehicles and options. Assembly takes place in Oxford, England where the company also builds the MINI Hardtop, MINI Convertible, and MINI Clubman. While the appeal of the luxurious little MINI is undeniable, one can't help but wonder if this is the first of many, or the last of one production MINI model to incorporate the opulent luxury of Roll-Royce Motor Cars.
