After two years of production and a very positive reception by Mini loyalists with growing families, the British premium compact brand will give its Countryman crossover some minor updates for 2013.

First, the U.S. market gets an update this year that was first introduced by Mini Canada for the 2012 model year, a standard three-seat rear bench seat that allows an additional passenger for seating up to five. Rear bucket seats continue to be available as a no-cost option.

The only major change for the Canadian market in 2013 might at first seem minor unless you've already had to live with Mini's centre-mounted power window switches. The automaker has added new door inserts with redesigned armrests to "provide even more comfortable support for the arms." Additionally, as part of the redesign, it has moved its power window switches from the centre console to the front doors, now allowing the driver to perform single-hand operation of multiple windows as well as deactivation of the rear windows and actuation of the outside power mirrors from the same panel. The Countryman was already the only vehicle in Mini's lineup to offer door-mounted power window switches, but before now only for its rear doors. The move also unclutters the row of chrome toggle switches on the centre stack, making for better ergonomics and easier access to a larger storage compartment below.

Additionally, the 2013 Countryman gets new Carbon Black ring surrounds for its four air vents and massive centre-mounted speedometer, plus inner rings in either high-gloss black or chrome, the latter if the Chrome Line Interior option is chosen.

Finally, the 2013 Countryman gets the usual updated exterior paint finishes, including Brilliant Copper metallic and Blazing Red metallic, as well as new interior colours.

The 2013 Mini Countryman will arrive in dealerships throughout Europe later this month, with North American availability expected soon after.
