We knew it was coming, but didn't know when. Now Porsche has confirmed that an electrified version of its four-door Panamera is indeed on the way, and that it will wear the Panamera S Hybrid nomenclature.

It appears that the German performance brand is embracing electrification wholeheartedly with the Cayenne S Hybrid now in production, 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid just announced and 911 GT3R racing car set to upset competitors each weekend, not to mention its trio of all electric Boxster research vehicles due next year.

The news of the Panamera S Hybrid came as part of an announcement about Porsche's plans for its three electric Boxsters, the release stating that the hybrid-electric four-door is set to debut in 2011.

According to reports, expect to see the same hardware currently propelling the Cayenne S Hybrid used to motivate the upcoming Panamera S Hybrid. That will include a 329-horsepower 3.0-litre V6 engine joined up to a 46-hp electric motor for impressive acceleration.

At low speeds the Panamera S Hybrid will be able to be driven under electric power alone, making it a full hybrid unlike Mercedes' new S 400 Hybrid, which is an engine-assisted mild hybrid.

The Panamera S Hybrid was merely an expected addition to Porsche's burgeoning HEV fleet, but a welcome one that will go far in reducing its CAFE rating and improving its image as a leader in environmental issues amongst performance oriented brands.
