There's a change going on at Porsche, and it's not all that different from what's going on with other carmakers these days. It's the age of electric, and while some brands are satisfied with hybrids, others want more.

Porsche appears to have been inspired by Tesla, in that it will soon begin testing a trio of Boxster roadsters with electric drivetrains. The purpose of the EV research cars is to evaluate electric drive components and battery systems that may be used for future all-electric production Porsches, and no doubt advanced hybrid models.

As importantly, the test is intended to investigate the necessary infrastructure for electromobility, as well as user behaviour and how such demands affect future Porsche products.

"We will definitely be offering an electric sports car in future," commented Michael Macht, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche AG. "But such a concept only makes sense if it offers product qualities typical of a Porsche."

According to Macht, it's only a matter of time until Porsche joins Tesla in offering a full electric vehicle, but the German automaker doesn't jump into market sectors quickly and therefore will likely take its time entering the EV world. Until then, we'll follow the development of these three research Boxsters.
