The Ram Truck brand recently announced the arrival of a new cargo vehicle, the aptly named Ram Cargo Van, or C/V for short. While it is essentially a revised and rebadged Dodge Caravan, the Ram C/V has a wealth of significant changes that help make it an ideal vehicle for small business owners.

For starters, the C/V is outfitted with solid interior side panels and an flat aluminum loading floor. It has a claimed 1,800 pounds (816 kg) cargo payload and width enough to lay a standard 4x8 piece of plywood between the wheel wells, plus it can tow up to 3,600 pounds (1,632 kg).

Boasting a 20 gallon (75.7 litre) fuel tank, Ram says the C/V will achieve 25 mpg (9.41 L/100km) on the highway which it claims to be best-in-class mileage.

Other notable features include a heavy-duty radiator and heavy-duty transmission oil cooler, which help the vehicle overcome the various demands of small-business owners. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is a standard feature as is a commercial load-tuned tire-pressure monitoring system (TPM) and anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes.

Powering the Ram Cargo Van is a Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 engine that develops 283 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The C/V also comes equipped with a front anti-sway bar, while at the rear of the van there is the same twist-beam axle with coil springs used in the Caravan.

On the inside, the Ram C/V has an impressive 144.4 cubic foot (4.1 cubic metres) storage capacity with access points from the rear liftgate and the dual sliding doors. Air conditioning and dual zone temperature control is standard as is a 120-volt auxiliary power outlet, front and rear 12-volt DC power outlets, and of course the now ubiquitous audio input jack for mobile devices. What comes as a surprise is the optional 30GB hard drive and the 6.5-inch touch-screen display. Some of the available options for the new Ram C/V include a ParkView reversing camera and a Garmin navigation system, as well as Sirius satellite radio and a hands-free voice command system with Bluetooth.

With a long list of standard and optional features, the Ram Cargo Van makes a compelling case to business owners and fleet buyers who need a light commercial van.

"With its class-leading capability and a lower total cost of ownership, the highly versatile Ram Cargo Van is a great vehicle choice for small businesses and commercial fleets," said Fred Diaz, President and CEO of Ram Truck.

The Ram C/V's most obvious competitor is Ford's Transit Connect, and now that two of the Big 3 are back in the light-duty commercial van business it begs the question of whether or not GM will enter the fray with something akin to the Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari vans that once dominated the segment.

The 2012 Ram Cargo Van will be assembled at the Windsor, Ontario assembly plant and will go on sale later this year.
