While the recent New York International Auto Show served as a showcase for many new models and concept cars, Shelby American Inc. used the venue to present its new Shelby GTS performance package for 2011 and 2012 Ford Mustangs. Shelby American Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. and both organizations are legendary for performance tuning Ford's Mustang sport coupe and convertible.

Shelby says the new GTS package fulfills desires of Ford Shelby GT fans across the world, and is available for V6 and V8 Mustangs both normally aspirated and supercharged. Though the GTS package was only recently introduced, Shelby says it was in development ever since Ford debuted the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 engines for the Mustang`s 2011 model year. Aside from working in-house to develop the new GTS package, Shelby also partnered with other popular automotive tuning companies including Borla, Baer, and Ford Racing. The resultant GTS performance package is claimed to enhance the Mustang's braking, suspension and engine output.

"The V6 Mustang is a particularly good platform for the Shelby GTS," said Shelby American Vice President of Operations Gary Patterson. "It's even lighter and more nimble than the GT. And the V6 Shelby GTS makes about as much horsepower as the V8 in the Ford Shelby GT, but with better fuel economy at a lower price."

The GTS performance package starts at $9,995 USD, which translates to $9,682 in Canadian funds at the time of writing. The package includes a Borla exhaust system, Shelby/Baer brakes, upgraded springs, tuned stabilizer bars, a front strut tower, revised front bodywork, plus Shelby and Ford badges, logos and racing stripes.

Options for the GTS performance package include six-piston Shelby/Baer brakes, adjustable control arms, a Watts link rear suspension, a two tone leather interior, 18- or 20-inch wheels and tires, plus a supercharger available for both V6 and V8 Mustangs.

"Our Shelby GTS is a fantastic way to pump up the capabilities of a stock Mustang within a budget without sacrificing performance," said the President of Shelby American Inc. John Luft. "It's a car that reaches a younger buyer while acknowledging the economic realities of our times."

At well over nine thousand dollars, consumers will ultimately determine the value and overall success of Shelby's latest performance package. Production of the Shelby GTS Mustang is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2011.
