The sport compact car segment is rather small but has always been very popular among automotive enthusiasts. In a partnership with Toyota, Subaru has been busy developing its own new sport compact which will be marketed both as a Toyota model and a Subaru model. This new sport compact is a front-engine rear-wheel-drive coupe, the first such model in Subaru's history.

Subaru calls its new concept car the BRZ Concept – STI, which "represents the next step in lightweight performance sports cars" according to the Japanese automaker. For those who don't know, Subaru Technica International, better known as STI, is Subaru's legendary motorsports division, and is responsible for developing the automaker's high performance rally cars.

Street legal Subarus with STI performance upgrades have garnered iconic status over the years and the BRZ Concept – STI will most likely feature the race-bred tuning of the STI division.

True to Subaru tradition, power for the BRZ Concept – STI is provided by a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine with horizontally-opposed pistons. Known as a boxer engine, it features a square bore and stroke of 86 mm x 86 mm as well as a direct injection fuel system which Subaru says will improve combustion efficiency and also smooth operation at high engine RPM.

Subaru's BRZ – Concept STI is finished in WR Blue Pearl II paint, a variation of the blue paint scheme which adorns Subaru's STI racing cars. Front end styling details include a hexagon-shaped front grille, "hawk eye" headlights and a lower front spoiler.

Around the back, there's a rear spoiler for added down-force, and four stainless-steel exhaust pipes. The BRZ Concept – STI is even outfitted with a carbon-fibre roof which helps to lower the car's centre of gravity due to its relatively light weight.

The BRZ Concept – STI rolls on 18-inch wheels with Brembo brakes, and the new sport coupe also features an STI-tuned suspension. Inside, there's room for four occupants in a classic 2+2 seating arrangement.

Production of the BRZ Concept – STI is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2012. In the meantime, the new rear-wheel-drive sport coupe will make its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show which begins on November 18.
