2010 Suzuki SX4 Hatchback JX

The Suzuki family is quite small here in Canada. In fact, there are only six members total. But just because it's a small family, doesn't mean they can't make a big impact. And one car in the lineup making a big impact in the automotive community is the SX4 hatchback. The SX4 comes in either the five-door hatchback or the four-door sedan body style. The main difference between the two is that the hatchback can be outfitted with an AWD system. The sedan unfortunately can't.

Having had the pleasure of driving the SX4 sedan and two trims in the hatchback model, I would opt for the hatchback AWD. Why? It best fits my lifestyle and the styling of the five-door looks cooler. It has a lot more personality and I felt as though its overall driving dynamics were more versatile. It also felt lighter on its feet even though all SX4's share the same 2.0L 4-cylinder engine with 143 horsepower and 136 lb-ft of torque.

Another common thread that united all the SX4s I drove was the optional 4-speed automatic transmission. While I would have liked to have driven these cute little cars with the standard 5-speed manual, the automatic did an ok job. I found it a little noisy in the cabin when I picked-up-the-pace a little quicker than normal, but all-in-all it wasn't too bad. The JX and AWD JLX also share the same set of P205/60R16 tires and 16" wheels. The rims on these cars look quite good actually, and give it that extra bit of flare.

For a set of relatively inexpensive vehicles, I am definitely a fan of the perks the cars come with including the steering wheel-mounted audio controls, the two-stage remote keyless entry with panic function, cruise control, air conditioning, speed sensing volume control and more. I also particularly liked the fact that both front seats include armrests. A lot of compact cars don't, so having this feature made driving a lot more comfortable. And when I didn't want to use mine, I just flipped them up out of the way and all was good.

Continuing with the features of the SX4, the AWD version included seat heaters whereas the FWD didn't, sigh. Where the standard features aren't compromised, on any trim level, is in the safety department. All SX4s come with dual front airbags, front seat-mounted airbags and side-curtain airbags, plus 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, BA and EBD. That's a whole lot of safety bundled under one roof.

Fuel economy in either the FWD or AWD wasn't too bad. The FWD uses an estimated 9.2L/100km in the city and 6.7L/100km on the highway, while AWD SX4s uses an estimated 9.9L/100km in the city and 7.1L/100km on the highway. The difference in fuel economy isn't huge thanks to Suzuki's 3-mode AWD system. This is a switchable system with the button located near the handbrake, allowing the driver to switch from 2WD mode to AWD when additional traction is needed. This not only saves on fuel, but also gives the best results in low-grip situations.

Where the SX4 hatchback falls short in comparison with the sedan is in cargo capacity. There isn't a whole lot of space in the five-door to store larger items thanks to only has 232L (8.2 cu ft) of available space. The sedan has a more impressive cargo capacity of 439L (15.5 cu ft) to work with. I also found that with the front seats all the way back there wasn't much legroom for the rear passengers. Now, I don't sit with the seat all the way back, but some of my passengers do so I'm glad I'm not the one who has to sit in the rear!  Ah, the perks of always being the driver.

When comparing the affordability of the FWD and the AWD versions with the optional automatic transmissions, there is quite a jump in price. The JX FWD has an MSRP of $19,995 and the JLX AWD has an MSRP of $24,295. For me, however, the extra money would totally be worth it for the AWD. Granted, that's a big chunk of change if you think about it, but it's always a good thing to have especially if you live in colder, snowier climates.

Overall, the 2010 SX4 Hatchback offers something that most of its competition doesn't: AWD. But even if you opt for the standard FWD it's still a neat little car to drive around town in. It's safe, cute and very versatile. It's a little Suzuki with a big heart.
