While it has been known that the Toyota iQ currently sold in Europe and Japan would be coming to North America, re-branded as the Scion iQ, it was not confirmed that it would also be available as a hybrid model. Now the news is out, and it promises to be the energizer bunny in the micro-sized lineup with a lot more power and still superb fuel economy.

The Scion iQ hybrid will be powered by a 1.5L engine coupled with an electric motor driving the front wheels to produce a combined 100 to 120 hp. Compare that with the non-hybrid version, which will be powered with a 93 hp 1.3L engine. Despite the performance advantage the hybrid rules the roost when it comes to fuel consumption, The Scion iQ hybrid is set to be released at the $15,000 price point - just slightly more expensive than high-end sportbikes. with an otherworldly 3.91L/100km proposed rating. Couple that with Toyota's expectation of rolling out the HEV version at or below $15,000, and it seems clear that most will be opting for the hybrid version.

Just the same, Toyota is planning on offering an expanded iQ range in North America, with four different flavours being offered. First to arrive sometime in late 2011 is the five-door hatchback, which will be followed by a three-door hatchback, and later, a sedan version, presumably in 2012. The last to arrive will be a convertible model, known internally as "iQ Sports".

Bringing the iQ into the Scion fold is expected to infuse some new life into Toyota's flagging youth brand. The inside word is that Scion is on the ropes and, if the iQ can't shore it up nothing will, and the brand may even be killed off. As a result, it looks as though Toyota has a great deal riding on the iQ's entry into North America.

This said, given the attractive features and reasonable price point, on paper it looks like Toyota could have a winner on its hands. Only time will tell. Stay tuned.
