Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and Microsoft Corporation recently announced a partnership to use the Windows Azure cloud computing operating system as a platform for TMC's next-generation telematics services. Toyota explains that telematics is a combination of telecommunications technology and information technologies incorporated into a vehicle. In other words, telematics can relate to GPS navigation, multimedia and even energy management.

Two giants in their respective industries, Toyota and Microsoft have ambitiously planned to launch the next-generation of telematics services on a global scale.

The proposition will see that 1 billion yen (approximately $12 million) will be invested into Toyota Media Services Co., which is a subsidiary of TMC that provides digital information services to Toyota's customers. The first Windows Azure based telematics applications are planned for release on Toyota's electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles as early as 2012. TMC has set a goal to provide a global cloud computing platform by the year 2015. The aim is to offer affordable telematics services to customers all over the world.

"Today's announcement of our partnership with TMC is a great example of how we continue to invest in the automotive industry and of our commitment to power the services that are important to consumers," said Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft Corporation. "It further validates the power of the cloud, as the Windows Azure platform will provide the enterprise-grade, scalable platform that TMC needs to deliver telematics in its automobiles worldwide."

Akio Toyoda, the President of Toyota Motor Corporation had the following to say of the collaboration with Microsoft. "This new partnership between Microsoft and Toyota is an important step in developing greater future mobility and energy management for consumers around the world. Creating these more efficient, more environmentally advanced products will be our contribution to society. To achieve this, it is important to develop a new link between vehicles, people and smart center energy-management systems."
