The 2012 model year brings a facelift and a few other changes to Toyota's Tacoma midsize pickup truck. Up front, there's a new grille, headlights, hood and bumper while the interior receives a redesigned steering wheel and shift knob.

A base 2.7-litre, 4-cylinder engine provides 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque and comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. A more powerful 4.0-litre V6 is also available with 236 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, and comes paired with either a 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission.

The 2012 Tacoma can be had with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, and all versions have a towing capacity of 1,587 kg. Rear-wheel drive Tacomas get an upgraded audio system, while 4x4 versions add such features as built-in Bluetooth capability and XM satellite radio. As before, the Tacoma is available as a four-seat Access Cab (4x2 and 4x4) or a more practical five-seat Double Cab (4x4 only).

Toyota's Star Safety System is standard on the 2012 Tacoma and includes traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, vehicle stability control, brake assist and smart stop technology.

"Tacoma has had nameplate recognition in this segment since 1995, and with this series of updates we've now made our world-renowned reputation in this category even stronger, ensuring the Tacoma will be foremost in consumers' minds for a long time to come when they think about mid-size trucks," said Warren Orton, Director at Toyota Canada. "While we see competitors leaving the segment, this gives us the opportunity to introduce even more Canadians to the benefits of driving a Tacoma."

The base price of the 2012 Tacoma is listed at $22,100 for the 4x2 Access Cab with 4-cylinder engine. 4x4 Access Cabs with the same engine list for $26,450 while 4x4 Access Cabs with the V6 start at $26,900. In top-of-the-range 4x4 Double Cab V6 guise, the Tacoma offers an SR5 power package and a TRD Sport with leather package that includes heated leather seats.

The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is available now and competes with other midsize pickup trucks such as the Ford Ranger, Chevrolet Colorado and Nissan Frontier.
